Insight Engine

Problem

We read constantly — articles, books, research papers — but retain very little. The problem isn't volume; it's that we lack systems for extracting and reinforcing the ideas that actually matter.

Insight

The value of reading isn't proportional to volume. It's proportional to the quality of what you retain and how you connect it to existing knowledge. Most reading tools optimize for consumption; almost none optimize for retention.

What I Built

A prototype that:

  • Analyzes highlights and annotations to identify key insights
  • Clusters related ideas across different sources
  • Uses spaced repetition to surface insights at optimal intervals
  • Tracks which insights actually influence your thinking over time

What I Learned

Defining "valuable insight" is surprisingly hard. What makes an idea worth retaining depends on context — your goals, your existing knowledge, your current projects. The most useful version of this tool would need to understand the user's context, not just their reading history.
